In the West the word, the thought, the dream, is made flesh. The higher order is wrought into the world.

There is a vast difference in mode of life between the Eastern and the Western world. The Eastern ideal is to exist, to be, rather than to become — to maintain existence, not to advance it. The Western and Christian ideal is not merely to live, but to live more abundantly — not merely to be, but to do, to accomplish, to achieve. The Eastern Nirvana is little if any more than escape from the pains of earthly life. The Western and Christian dream is not of salvation alone, but of creation as well, the achievement of a heavenly kingdom in this world no less than in worlds to come — not resignation but dedication to dreams of the spirit and its ever-widening goals. The East has no gospel of creation, no program for the objectification of dreams. Its relatively static and unprogressive mode of life is a faithful reflection of the impotence of its dreams.

The West has a positive philosophy, a religion of hope and faith, of confidence in the creative spirit breathed into man whereby his word, his thought, his dream can be made flesh — whereby his spirit can be wrought into his world. His gospel does /not/ renounce. It com­mands. It commands him to love his fellow man, not in sentiment alone, but in outward action, which is the objective side of love. He must love the Divine Spirit as manifested in his fellow men. He must serve them, not in servitude, but voluntarily, in the manner he would have them serve him. Under this golden rule, in this mutuality of service, they enter into their creative dominion. They produce and they create in their outer world the image of their inner dreams, and all things are added unto them, even unto length of days in this life as in worlds to come.
