Gideon Payne and his wife, Phoebe Hill, were Quakers, buried in Quaker Cemetery, Farmington NY.

Member of Aero Club of America and Society of Automotive Engineers. Manufacturer and developer of airplane propellers and other mechanical devices. With factories in Baltimore from 1912 to 1929. Chief American supplier of propellers to U.S. and Allies during Great War. In 1929 sold all business interests including numerous U.S. and foreign patents to Bendix Aviation Corp. Other interests (hobbies): History and development of jurisprudence – political economy. Active in Chicago Single Tax Club 1900-1901 and continuous supporter of Single-Tax movement to date. Member of Manhattan Single Tax Club (founded by Henry George) and United Committee for Taxation of Land Values, Great Britain. Pedagogy and Education – life-long amateur interest. Patron (deus ex machina) of The Little School, Winchester VA. General Science and Literature – wide range of reading interest. Horticulture – Active amateur interest. Music – intensely appreciative but almost illiterate. National politics – Democratic and always a Free Trader.
