Carbon of letter from Spencer Heath to Hon. Wm. F. Laukaitis, Chief Justice of Traffic Court, Baltimore, Maryland

September 5, 1938

Dear Sir:

I take the first convenient opportunity of replying to your communication of August 26th signed “O’Neill” which I received just as I was leaving Baltimore for an extended period.

It appears that my act of permitting a motor car to stand (in charge of my secretary) at the main entrance of the Pratt Public Library only long enough to unload and deliver two books from it before leaving the city has been taken as an offense against the public and general laws of your jurisdiction. If such is really the case I request that you advise me of the fact and name the amount of pecuniary punishment that I may voluntarily accept in order to vindicate the law and save me from further appearance (and anxiety) as being a fugitive from justice.

Since I do not expect to return to Maryland before late October, I request that you address and advise me in care of the United States Trust Company, 45 Wall Street, New York, who will either deliver or forward your communication to me.

Very truly yours,

Spencer Heath
