Carbon of a letter from Heath to John W. Nason, Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania
May 1, 1941
Dear Doctor Nason;-
I remember that when I received your letter of February 11th in which you referred to mine of the 5th and attached pamphlets, my secretary remarked that this was not a very encouraging reply. However, upon reading it carefully, I remarked that it was just the kind of reply that I liked to get. A note was made on the bottom of your letter as a reminder to write you again later in the Spring. This I am happy to do, for I feel that it will be a great personal pleasure to see you, as you will not be reluctant to consider serious proposals concerning public and general affairs or, more probably, some serious analysis of the existing state of affairs, as a source of light for sound and practical measures.
I note that you are skeptical about my general line of thinking. It is natural that you should be so. The kind of thinking that is easily accepted is always traditional. Emergences of more successful levels of action and thought are always skeptically received, and the most profound skeptics often become the most ardent advocates.
I am planning to spend the week of May 12th in New York City, and will be driving northward on Thursday or Friday, the 8th or 9th of May. If you should still be happy to see me that much later In the Spring, I shall be very happy to see you.
Sincerely yours,
Spencer Heath
