Letter to Ayn Rand, c/o Bobbs Merrill Company, 468 Fourth Avenue, New York City
January 7, 1946
Dear Ayn Rand:
I have just finished reading The Fountainhead.
I want to thank you humbly for writing it. Not because the world so terribly needs it, but because I need it; because it inspires me to know that the intuitions of my early years — so opposed to the dull and destructive mass-mindedness all about me, and since then more and more rationally confirmed — are also the burning beacons of other independent minds.
Let me glory with you in the success of this brilliant creative work, with its at least faint heralding of a day of acknowledgement that man’s first duty to man is to let him alone — that all human relationships are destructive save those that are mutually cherished and sought.
Sincerely,
