Radiant energy proceeds from its source in a succession or stream of quanta. But unlike a stream of particles it proceeds not in a single or linear direction but in all directions. It thus occupies progressively increasing spherical volumes of three-dimensional space. It occupies this spherical volume in virtue of its two kinds of motion: linear motion in all directions from its origin and transverse motion in all directions perpendicular to its linear, and therefore resolvable by co-ordinates into two transverse motions.
