Dear Dr. Ilg:

It was nice meeting you at Waterford, and I look forward to seeing and talking with you again.

Apropos of our various interests, I am sending you a reprint taken from Olive Schreiner’s little volume, Dreams, the title of which, in the original, was “In a Ruined Chapel,” but which I had reprinted some years ago under the title, “The Covenant of Beauty.” I used this two or three times as a Christmas greeting and my present supply of them is nearly exhausted. However, I do not intend ever to have so few of them that I cannot spare one for a friend like you. I think I can anticipate what will be your reaction to it, not only personally but in its relation to the aims and ideals of your very special profession.

I wonder if I told you anything about the scientific and philosophic as well as poetic character of the writings of Donald Culross Peattie, and most particularly his volume, The Flowering Earth.  Please let me know if you are familiar with this book.

Sincerely,

SH/m
