Letter to Harold and Isabelle Roche, Royal York Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida

October 27, 1956

Dear Harold and Isabelle:

It certainly was fine to have you both here for luncheon with me and my daughter, Beatrice, and her friends.

I was glad to see you both looking so fine after so much uncertainty about the health of both of you. And I am happy, Harold, to know that that old public-spirited horse (hobby, that is) of yours is still alive and breathing heavily for the big upturn which is almost sure to be in the works. The finest results often rise upon the ashes of seeming total failure. Every Christian ought to know this.

Speaking of Christians, I count myself something of one in the sense that everybody else is (that is, every Christian), but also in another sense that many do not seem to realize. To me, Christ’s message was for all humanity in every world — not only future worlds, but in our world of today. He brought the message for today, yet for ages most Christians thought, so far as blessings and rewards are concerned, that it was only for tomorrow and for other days to come.

I have felt that this important application of Christ’s Golden-Rule principle ought to be brought forward as a spiritual solution of the sorry problems of today. This in no wise takes the place of the customary beliefs about the future world, but does give the Christian philosophy credit for being valid and redemptive in the affairs of this world as well.

I like to talk about this to whomever will listen; so, I have put together under the general title, “The Christian Doctrine of Man,” some six subordinate topics with which I am somewhat accustomed to deal whenever I have the opportunity and willing hearers.

I think you will like these topics and the way I handle them, as indicated by the synopsis under each one. So, I am sending you a half-dozen folders, setting out something of my general treatment and point of view.

Have a big time in Florida, and let us know about your schedule when you return so we can get together again when you are passing through Washington, Baltimore or New York.

With all best wishes,

                   Affectionately,

SH/m
