Letter from Heath at The Science of Society Foundation, Roadsend Gardens, Elkridge, Maryland, to Edmund W. Sinnott, Department of Biology, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, October 5, 1956. Letter was prepared July 30, to be mailed in October when arrangements with Beacon Press were to have been completed. It was never sent.
Dear Dr. Sinnott:
Some months ago, it was my great pleasure to drop you a line of appreciation concerning your The Biology of the Spirit. I almost mentioned at that time a similar work of my own. Similar in all its fundamentals, but beginning with purely physical phenomena and leading to the creative — and thereby spiritual — nature of man through his interfunctioning in reciprocal ways with his fellow men, and in this new birth into a spiritual organization carrying forward the drama of Genesis — creating an ever better organized world in which to enjoy ever lengthening, perhaps never ending days.
Your reference to the quantum of action as perhaps the most fundamental organizational unit prompts me to send you herewith copy of the “Prefatory Brief” with which my volume begins, and upon the basis of which my last chapter concludes under the title, “The Inspiration of Beauty.”
My own volume will be published in a few months by Beacon Press of Boston. I shall be most happy if, when you have seen it, your response may be in some degree similar to my response to yours.
Sincerely,
