Carbon of a letter from Heath to Robert Ulrich, Graduate School of Education, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts

November 3, 1958

Dear Professor Ulrich:

I have been profoundly impressed by your article, “The Cleavage Between Intellectual and Spiritual Life,” published in the Proceedings of the Myrin Institute at Adelphi College last spring. I value exceedingly the broad generalizations made both intuitively and deductively upon otherwise diverse data.

The subjective life of man has its source within. So also does his objective life. But the objective — the spatial and temporal — is rationally and adequately fulfilled only through its elements being organized under high generalizations proceeding out of minds like yours.

It is with the thought that you would appreciate and enjoy my own arrangement of the pieces which make up the “set” (other than political) of the social scene, in accordance with some higher philosophic generalizations than have heretofore been explicitly employed, that I am sending to you some descriptive matter of my Citadel, Market and Altar. If you think you would enjoy reading this book and will so indicate, I shall be happy to have it sent to you gratis with my very high compliments.

                            Sincerely yours,
