Full many noble friends my soul would know,
Women and men who in my longing life
Might sow such seeds of beauty as would grow
To noble service ‘mid the present strife.
Ah! Many a time when I feel quite alone
Within my heart some longing hopes remain
That when my calm despair shall quite atone
I may some calmer love and friendship gain.
And in my fancy such fair dreams as this
Fill many a barren with sweet
That bid me wait the half-expected bliss
Of holy friendship with its joys replete.
When all these soothing dreams shall prove in vain
And leave in me a seared and hopeless heart
Then give me strength to profit by my pain
Or let death be my unregretted part.
