There are two scales of value, the one objective, the other subjective. One is within nature, the other within man. One is the order of evolvement and sequence, of implacable time and necessity; the world before the life in it, the lower lives before the higher and without which no high could have been or even now be. This is the order of nature and the Cosmos, ordained of God, the sine qua non. It cannot be set aside. In this order that which is first is greatest because most potential, on which all depends as on God.
But the order within man, the subjective order, is different. It is not concerned with causes, only results. Here the concern is not sequence or necessity but consummation and appreciation. Its values are not caused or potential, but immediate and esthetic, the indwelling of beauty, of inspiration. The outer order is rational, quantitative, the inner qualitative, artistic. The outer ministers; the inner is ministered unto, its dreams fulfilled.
Just as the Divinity, the Absolute Dream, reflects Itself in the order of nature, so does the divinity potential in man enable him to build and rebuild his world into the image of his dream.
The unregenerate man, like all before him, is creature; his divinity sleeps. The regenerate wakes to the rational in him
