/Toynbee speaking of sin and suffering as something which men can “profit by as a means of grace on the principle of _________ ” – an expression in Greek which he translates in a footnote, “It is through suffering that learning comes.”/

 

 

     Suffering may turn men away from evil, from destruction and death, but it is only under inspiration that they can do goodcreate, be divine.
