Western Farmer —
Sec’y Wallace —
The trouble with you, Mr. Western Farmers is that your crops are too large. The lot of you produce so much food you cannot exchange it for manufactures and other non-agricultural products. You must cut down your production until there will be no surplus to export. It will not then be necessary to reduce tariffs so foreign producers can send their manufactures here to pay for your exports. Then Mr. Mellon, the harvester trust and other monopolists can continue to pay such big wages that they can provide you with more manufactured goods for your small crops than they and foreign manufacturers together could furnish you for your large crops under unrestrained production.
