There is no human warrant for assuming infinite capacities and powers. Unless we do so assume, we must recognize that the cosmic environment is without any such limitations as those which apply to the human individual or Society. The natural sciences are founded exclusively upon what the outer world conveys to us though the medium of our limited senses, plus the conceptual structures which we build by a uniform rationality out of these basic materials. Of the source whence these materials come, we cannot dogmatize. But since they present themselves to us in a rational order, we can extrapolate that order into the non-physical or metaphysical world, where there are no such limitations other than those which rationality demands. Taking the events of our objective world as foundation, we can trace them to the quantum of action as the least event that enters into the spectrum of our objective experience. Mentally, however, we may pass indefinitely beyond this limit to a sub-quantal world in which the phenomena transcend experience except as they may become integrated into events of quantum and multiquantal magnitude. This may account for “action at a distance” in which the intervening events are real in a cosmic sense, although wholly unreal and non-existent so far as any objective experience is concerned. The magician’s wand swings round the levitated body encountering nothing there. This may be the pattern of the apparent void between magnet and armature, the earth and a falling body. If and when the mind of man takes habitation in at present unknown forms, then there may be whole worlds of experience that are at present wholly inaccessible — to minds dependent for their functioning upon the somewhat standardized bodily structures to which they are bound.
