My dear Mr. Heath:

When an atom emits energy, it emits it as a train of waves, thus: ____________. This train of waves contains a quantum of energy = hf, which is indivisible. (h is Planck’s quantum and f is the frequency of the light emitted.) You should not, from the nature of the case, enquire how much energy is associated with one wave length of the wave train.

May I again suggest that, in your studies of human behaviour, you turn to statistical studies, like the Kinetic Theory of Gases, rather than to the Quantum Theory.

Very truly yours,

/s/ C. W. van der Merwe

Chairman
