My dear Spencer:

 

     Thanks so much for your telegram of December 24 and I am deeply grateful for your words of praise and commendation.

 

Naturally, we are all proud of dear old America and our worldly possessions, but when the good Lord taps us on the shoulder, about all we can leave behind of any value is friends and I am happy to number you among mine.

 

My best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
