Letter dictated by Heath to Spencer MacCallum, at the latter’s instance, to Pope Pius XII, The Vatican, Rome, Italy

September 12, 1954

Your Holiness:

The Science of Society Foundation proposes to give currency to its negative position in reference to land communism as expounded some years ago by the Reverend Dr. Edward McGlynn and for which, among other things, as we understand it, he was for some six years under the Papal ban of excommunication. At the end of that time he was re-instated into his priestly offices upon the basis of a so-called “Doctrinal Statement” by him which was examined by Mgr. Satolli and five associates whom His Holiness, Pope Leo XIII, dispatched to America for the purpose, among other things, of examining the land theories of Dr. McGlynn.

The decision upon which Dr. McGlynn was reinstated contained, as we understand it, a declaration that there was “nothing in the land philosophy preached by Dr. McGlynn that was contrary to the Christian faith or to Christian doctrine.”

We are enclosing herewith a copy of the adverse critique which we have prepared and are proposing to publish. We are sending this copy of our critique out of our deep respect for Your Holiness and for whatever instruction or comment, favorable or otherwise, Your Holiness may deem proper to vouchsafe to us.

 With deep veneration we remain,

Most respectfully yours,
