Item 2512

Carbon of letter, ostensibly from someone other than Heath but not here named (though presumably by Heath on stylistic grounds), to Chamber of Commerce, Washington, D.C., C/o Radio Station KJZ. Undated but probably 1947 since there is a Friday December 12th in that year and this was found with some papers of 1945.

Gentlemen:

Listening to your broadcast over Station WJZ Friday evening December 12th, I greatly admired the logic and the clarity with which your speaker pointed up the detrimental role of government in strangling Free Enterprise in general and our Free-enterprise Public Utility Companies in particular in their struggle against tax-subsidized political agencies operating in the same field.

In this connection and in confirmation of your views so excellently presented over WJZ, I feel that I should call your attention to the philosophy of Free Enterprise as set out in an unpublished manuscript that I have had opportunity to examine. The author, Spencer Heath, after successful careers in the fields of engineering, mechanical, electrical and aeronautical, and the practice of engineering law, has given some fifteen or twenty years to research into the structure and mode of operation of the voluntary social and economic organization, entirely apart from the political and governmental organization with which it is heavily burdened.

He finds Free Enterprise to be in full accord with all the creative activities of science, of religion, and of the cultural arts and, in addition, the only mode in which their fruits are disseminated throughout the mass of mankind. His unpublished manuscript is a well-organized report of extraordinary findings, including, uniquely, a practical non-political working technology for the vastly profitable extension of Free Enterprise into fields hitherto untouched.

In the fight of the “Free World” against communism (which is simply the ultimate of government taxation and control) there is much need of an inspiring constructive philosophy of Free Enterprise — especially one that carries with it a practical technology for the making of fortunes and thereby at the same time strengthening our society and advancing social ideals.

Mr. Heath’s manuscript report entitled, Citadel, Market and Altar, in my opinion is destined to become a guiding light and landmark on the road to human freedom for generations yet to come. Due to his originality, business capacity and practical turn of mind, the author has for some years enjoyed independence of fortune sufficient to assure him of leisure and support his independence of mind. He is thus under no urgency to publish for the sake of any return. I am writing to you without any suggestion from him but by his permission which 1 have obtained. His report contains much material with which I feel that your radio program for Free Enterprise might well be supplemented and enriched and himself possibly become a feature of it if you should so desire.

Please drop me a line at the above address, indicating your desire for further information.

Very truly yours,
