Dear Dr. Opitz:              January 21, 1957

Mr. Chester C. Lane, Associate Business Manager of the New York Times, is a Unitarian Churchman very much interested in opposing the so-called “social action” movement in the churches. I talked with him briefly about this, and he is serious. I want him to have a copy of your two admirable paper-bound books dealing with the “social action” movement. One of these is The Kingdom Without God, but the other title I have forgotten. I would send him mine, but they are in Baltimore now; and moreover, I annotated both of them.

So please see that these reach Mr. Lane at my expense, and perhaps you will also be good enough to mention my name to him.

His address is The Harvard Club, 27 West 44th Street, New York 36, New York.

 Many kind wishes,

Cordially,

SH/m

Dear Mr. Lane:               January 25, 1957

At the request of my good friend, Spencer Heath, and with his compliments, copies of two books, The Powers That Be and The Kingdom Without God, are being sent to you.

He may have told you that I am a Unitarian minister, having had a church in the town of Hingham, Massachusetts — the second parish. The books deal in a variety of ways with one main theme, the churches’ misconception of their role which sees it in terms of secular reform by political means. I think our own Unitarian Association has been an offender in this regard, although not as spectacular a one as some other denominations.

I should be pleased to have your reactions after you have looked over the books.

 With every good wish,

Yours sincerely,

Edmund A. Opitz
