Exchange of letters between Heath’s daughter, Mrs. Lucile Heath MacCallum, Waterford, Virginia, June 29, 1957, and C. Norman Stabler, The Herald Tribune, New York City, July 2, 1957

Dear Mr. Stabler,                      June 29, 1957

My Spencer finally sent me a copy of your article about my Poppie and his book. They had been telling me, over the telephone, how fine it was. Only, they didn’t tell me enough. Your discussion of the man and his ideas is wonderful! You have pointed out the contribution of Citadel, Market and Altar in a strong, simple and relaxed manner. I was delighted by it.

Do you and your family ever come to this part of the world? I’d love to have you stop in to see me – and I’ll round up some charming Stablers to meet you.

 Good wishes to you.

Very sincerely yours,

(Mrs. Heath MacCallum)

Dear Mrs. MacCallum:                        July 2, 1957

It was nice to hear from you and I am glad that your son, Spencer, sent you the copy of my review. As you doubtless noticed, a great deal of it was stolen from John Chamberlain.

I had the pleasure of talking with Mr. Chamberlain and also with Spencer. Possibly your son did not tell you that I made a mistake when I greeted him. I said something to the effect: “I am glad to meet you and I had such a pleasant conversation with your wife the other day at the cocktail party.” He replied: “My mother will be very glad to hear that.” I still maintain this wasn’t a real error, or at least I was justified by your young appearance.

I have read your father’s book a couple of times and I must admit it is a little over the head of a poor newspaperman who covers things as simple as Wall Street, but it is a fine work and I hope he does well with it.

You are kind to invite me down to meet some of the “charming Stablers”. Those I have met are charming but I am afraid I cannot accept. I have to stay very close to the office in connection with my column. On my brief vacation I go to upper New York. But the time may come yet and, in any event, it was a pleasure to meet you and the other members of your clan.

Sincerely,

C. Norman Stabler Financial Columnist
