Letter to Lucille Cardin (Mrs. Kenneth C.) Crain, 238 East 23rd Street, New York 10, New York, with a note added by Spencer MacCallum

August 3, 1957

Dear Mrs. Crain:

Thank you for your very pleasant letter of May 28th with acknowledgment of my invitation to the debut of CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR at the Plaza. I hope you have been enjoying your little seashore place, the occasion of your not being able to attend. It is gratifying to know that you could take a copy of my book with you. It had been my definite intention to send a gift copy to you, so it is good to know that you already had one through the kindness of Mrs. Burton Rascoe.

It was something of a shock to learn of Mr. Rascoe’s sudden death. I knew him only through his reviews and other writings, but often felt that I would like to know him more intimately. I am sure Mrs. Rascoe has been fortunate in having you help her arrange and dispose of her husband’s papers and library.

I am sure your reading of CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR has been more understanding than most. Emerson says that the value of a book is as much in what the reader brings to it as in what he takes out of it. With your passion for liberty and for understanding, I am sure your reading will be as perceptive as I could wish.

Trusting this summertime is acting kindly towards you, and looking forward to seeing you, as usually, well refreshed, I am

Sincerely yours,

SH/m

Dear Mrs. Crain:                                August 3, 1957

I’d like to add my own good wishes, also to say that we’ve had some fine comments about CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR that I am reproducing for promotional material and will send to you next week. They come from such persons as Rose Wilder Lane, Virgil Jordan and William Ernest Hocking.

In the middle of September, I’ll be off for Seattle and the University of Washington to take up anthropology. I hope we’ll have a chance to see you before then.

Sincerely,
