. . . and renders back to all in proportion as they have freely put in. Only in its degree of freedom can enterprise create and endure. All that government can do is to distribute, without the equity of exchange, what freedom creates. Governments only distribute out of the plenty that freedom creates or out of the starveling subsistence that remains above waste and war.
The organization of men in free or contractual relations — the productive, the creative and thus spiritual relationships among men — have vastly developed and evolved. Vast numbers of men have converted the separate ownership of their accumulated wealth and savings into equal but undivided interests in highly organized companies and corporations or the like. In this creative and thus spiritual cooperation — acting together — they have wrought vast use and beauty into such of nature’s gifts and terrain as they own and by distributing them or the use of them have received vast values in return. In production as in distribution by free enterprises, whether corporate or individual, almost nothing is carried on in the same manner as only a few centuries ago.
