Carbon of typed letter to “Marie” (not identified — possibly his first wife and mother of his children?)

Dear Marie:

A week has passed. I really thought you would write as you said you would and let me know how everything is with you.

I’m having a busy time. Spent the day yesterday with lawyers and agents. Have decided to get out from under all the property so I will be free to go on the road or where I will. I have prepared descriptive matter for advertisements and getting photographs today. My feelings are set against keeping the place here any longer than it takes to dispose of it. On recommendation of one of the agents I have arranged with a printing company to get out an illustrated descriptive circular as soon as the photographs are ready. I surely do need you for this, as well as on other things. My mind is running strong to distant places – California, Montreal, Princeton, and points between. With some scheduling ahead I will get momentum and inspiration and soon develop a lot more skill and finesse of presentation than I now possess.

The printer has the copy for my next circular and it will be out soon.

Ada is in New England all this week. Says she will call you in passing through New York.

Sorry you were feeling so badly about arrangements. All I have ever done for you was done by desire and without previous promises. With good cooperation on large issues, that carry far and wide, neither of us will stumble over things that are subordinate and incidental to them, however necessary or important. It is better to keep desire active than it is to bind by obligations.

Would you like to come down here this week-end, my guest from the time you leave? Call me tomorrow, Wednesday, evening after seven, reverse charges.

Yours,    S. H.
