Dear Mr. Munson:
A thousand thanks to you for your gift of a copy of Earl Harding’s book laying bare the alleged conspiracy and corruption with which the United States plans for an Isthmian Canal were switched over to Panama by way of a Roosevelt-created insurrection and dummy republic against the sovereignty of the Republic of Colombia.
I have read only about half of the Harding book, but it bears out my own personal recollections of the facts and of my indignation at the time. However, it does not seem as though any useful purpose can now be served by any postmortem evidence and explication of the pretty sorry mess of more than 50 years ago.
On the contrary, does it not seem to you that in the present world situation vis a vis the international conspiracy that such a revival tends to reflect on the legitimacy of United States sovereignty and ownership over the Canal, and thus play into the hands of the present day world conspirators?
I have not finished reading Harding’s book, and of course may get some further slant from it, although I doubt it. Referring to the framework of my proposed Suez solution, which is in your hands, what do you think about the rapidly approaching critical situation?
Cordially,
sh/m
