White envelope also has original of early version of “Instead of Violence”

My dear Spencer:

I do appreciate your good letter of the 2nd for which I thank you most profusely.

All of us here always look forward to your visits, so come again as soon as you can, at which time we can “talk earnestly and searchingly.”

The enclosure, “Instead of Violence” is in an early rough form. We probably won’t publish it but I do these things as an exercise in thinking. It deals with the more obvious outgrowth of force as it manifests itself in international terms and not with the originating instances of force which is what you have in mind. Nonetheless, you may find it of interest and, of course, I’d be pleased to have your views concerning it.

Cordially,

/s/ Leonard
