Man has two natures, animal and human. The one he shares with the lesser forms of life; in the other he is unique.

On his merely animal side he shares their lives, their hates, their fears — a creature bound by his necessities and to flee or attack whatever, rightly or wrongly, he suffers or fears. In all this he is undistinguished from other creatures. But in his human potentialities he is more than mere creature. He has rational and imaginative faculties that are not mere reactions to necessity and pain but spring from leisure and freedom.
