For some millennia society — civilization — has been developing out of nomadism, through slavery (once universal), into the increasingly free and productive community, towards the fully functioning society creating its own conditions of existence and thereby conferring upon its members increasingly abundant life. The process is slow, with many vicissitudes, even reversals, but indefatigable, like the evolution of plant and animal forms.¹⁶³
