The narrator came into the world with the last quarter of the Nineteenth Century. When parental condition would have him become a theologian, he disqualified himself by asking the kind of questions that should never be asked — questions prompted by the devil, as he was authoritatively assured. So he sought his answers in sciences less divine. He took to physics because here questions were not denied and the answers would be _______. For three days and nights he devoured the elements with delight and then, for want of memorizing verbatim the italicized portions of the text he again ignominiously flunked the course. A flair for practicality in technical fields brought him a livelihood, a family and, after due preparation, a comprehension of its history and his admission to the practice of law.
