/building blocks?/ of the universe” have or at least may be presumed to possess the same qualitative character, despite their quantitative equivalence, that is found /in?/ all the higher structures into which they are wrought. This qualitative property may be defined negatively as being something undescribed but acting and existing and manifesting itself independently of any quantitative relationship or equivalence. It is also to be defined as that property of energy that makes its diverse organizations reciprocal in that one is qualified to give off its energy to the other and thus impose changes upon it while the other is adapted to take on energy and be changed. The first may be called positively qualitative or creative. And it possesses this property, as was shown in a previous chapter, through the preponderance in its own internal organization of the elements of motion or activity and duration or eternality over its units of substance or mass. Thus in the basic trinity of science as of theology there is manifested the same ascending hierarchal order, called “Substance, Power and Eternality, among the elements of which their respective conceptions of Reality are indivisibly and indissolubly composed.
