The whole ancient world except nomads and barbarians was a world of authority, of dominance and subservience, a world of sovereign force maintained by the dungeon and the sword, the galleons and the cross. There were few citizens and many slaves. The medieval world was similar. Authority had come full term in the Pax Romana, in the warless world of nations united under Rome.
