To that One who has embodied my dreams and deepened

my sense of the possible beauty of existence

   CONSUMMATION

The rift of golden dawn, the blushing of the rose,

Warm sighing winds, the passion of world-bosomed tides,

The glory of the skies, the splendor of the sun,—

These rive my heart no more with longing long repressed

Nor leave my soul for beauty questing without rest,

For I have seen a face aglow, all dream-fulfilled,

Its ruby chalice nectar-brimming to be drained,

Eyes deep in ecstasy enswooned, pale cheeks rose-dawned,

And we have been as gods to sip divinest sweets —

Infinitudes encompassed in each hour of bliss.

/Alternate closing lines, presumed       but not known to be earlier:/

And I have been a god to sip divinest sweets — Infinitude encompassed in one hour of bliss.

/Penned lines from a wallet containing materials dated 1932 to 1937 and possibly related to the foregoing:/

A flower face white as a lily blown

Offering her chalice for some god to drain

Swooning in ecstasy towards things unknown

Athirst for love’s harvest of joy and pain
