Item 715
Quoting Isaac Leon Kandel, in the Journal of Social Philosophy, October, 1935.
Original is in item 714.
“The problem is not one of reorganizing society through the schools but of developing that enlightenment and that insight into the nature of society as it is and into its needs which alone can make citizenship more effective. Society will insist upon ensuring its stability through education, — but the stability of a democratic society implies also freedom to think. … The task, then, for social philosophy for education is first to discover those objects of social allegiance which in Cole’s terms are ‘necessary to secure a firm basis for a society.’ … a large measure of agreement concerning the basis on which society is to rest.”
