A penciled verse by Heath, probably inspired by (because of its similarity) Velma West Sykes’s poem, “The Hill Bred,” opening his essay, “Historical Perspective,” Item 2086. Found at the back of the same stenographic pad as items 938-943, it is similar enough that it could be added to Sykes’ poem, perhaps opening it.

Thank God for rugged men in rugged lands,

Where dwell the simple and the strong,

For hearts of oak with horny tender hands,

For homely dreams in homespun song
