Mr. Briggs at King’s Crown Hotel relates that Lord Byron made only two addresses in the House of Lords. One of them was upon the situation caused by the “Luddite” uprisings in North England against the introduction of machinery:
“If you convict the Luddites you must have a Jeffrey for judge and twelve butchers for a jury.”
