The closing chapter by Dewey and Child, “The Underlying Philosophy of Education,” is a plea for intelligent experimenting along economic lines, using intelligent persuasion by preference, but violent action if necessary. They insist on continuous planning. They are against “profit” and “profit motive” and “competition,” and seem to believe that private profit cannot be compatible with the public interest. They urge “the choice of intelligence as the preferred method of action.” They think this implies a “moral” outlook. They would have this become a part of education. They offer intelligence as the only motive to social improvement and look to art as a secondary thing to arise after economic improvement.
