Man is a creature of singular polarities. On his animal side he is all repulsion. He resists pain and its ultimate, which is extinction. His reactions are at the reflex level and he is in the thrall of circumstance. He is beset by devils and his escape or their destruction or appeasement are his dominant roles.

On his human side he is all attraction. His urge is inspiration, his hunger aspiration, his satisfaction is in attainment and his goal the realization of his dream.
