Extract from notes for a letter to B.G. (Beryla Gorham?)

I do not despise the work-a-day things. They are the foundation of all that is beautiful. But someone must build the “music and the dream,” and how few they be in whom beauty strives to break the bondage of material things and [needs?] and lay its benedictions on surrounding lives. My heart burns with desire to see the strength and beauty of your spirit blossom in deeds of joy to you and blessedness to all within the circle of your inspiring charm. Whether we realize it or not there is no fine and pure love but that inspired by beauty. Such love finds no joy but in self-giving to its object. Your whole heart is made for love — overflowing with love — but, like mine, it needs an object to which or to whom it can give itself completely and in joy — not a distant thing to be loved when attained but a cause or an object of beauty or a person whom we can feel to grow under the daily ministrations of our hearts and lives.
