Dear Mr. Walker:
I was indeed glad to receive your very delightful letter of with its kind personal cordiality and intellectual hospitality. For some personal and other reasons drawing my thoughts Westward, I had hoped that through you and your associates in good works I might have sufficient occasion to repeat my recent journey.
For many ages the problem of public welfare has lain heavily on the hearts of men of good will. Like the problems of overcoming plagues and of making avail of the powers of the earth and air, each great forward step has followed upon some new discovery or illumination of the mind concerning the then existing state of affairs.
