Carbon of letter from Heath to Robert Langer, 231 West 96th Street, New York City
November 19, 1939
Dear Dr. Langer:
It was a great pleasure to meet you and talk with you last night and I hope to see you again.
I enclose the “Energy Concept” of which I spoke and in which you were kindly interested.
You will note that the fundamental social relationship — the basis of all values — discovered here is the same exchange process that I treat of as the function of private property in land. I feel that all social institutions might well be interpreted and appraised in the light of their contribution to this basic social function — namely, voluntary exchange of energy in service forms. This building up and mutual enhancement of each other’s power by the social units and groups is what gives the population its creative power over its environment and thus power to govern and determine, indirectly, its own evolution.
I hope your exile in this land may not be without profit and that from the eclipse of your own country there will come a happy dawn.
Sincerely,
