Carbon of a letter from Heath to Harry Haase, The School of Democracy, 1165 Broadway, New York NY.

January 23, 1941

Original is missing.

Dear Mr. Haase:

I am wondering how you are getting along with your project. I feel very much as though I would like to help you with it in one way or another. It just happens that I cannot conscientiously encourage that part of any economic teaching which tends to discredit the institution of property and the practice of proprietorship with respect to natural resources and land. I think a great deal of the way you seem to have handled the matter of economics in general in your new book, and feel sure you will do a great deal of good in connection with your school.

I think you will observe from the topics on the enclosed leaflet that my own thinking in respect to economic freedom and functioning corresponds very closely to your own, the one exception being that we have divergent views as to the social utility of the institution of property in land. In all other respects, I should very much like to encourage and contribute to the success of your work, and shall be glad of any opportunity that may arise for giving you personal assistance in it. Quite possibly some of the topics on the accompanying sheet will appeal to you in case you should wish me to present some aspects of the philosophy of economic freedom to any of your classes or groups.

I now look forward to being with you or, at least, in your City (Woodstock Hotel) on January 29th, and for some days into the following week.

With very kind regards, and wishing you much growth and development in all respects, I am,

Sincerely yours,
