Carbon of a letter from Heath to William Newcomb, New York City
March 12, 1941
Dear Mr. Newcomb:
This is just a brief note to let you know that I will be spending the week of March 17th in New York, and at the Hotel Woodstock, as usual.
If you have anything on your mind that you want to get off, or anything off your mind that you want to get on, give me a ring or a call, and I will see if I can give you a helping hand in the desired transfer.
Please note that I am making the above suggestion to you and not to our good earnest and urbane friend, Mr. Steel.
I am wondering how your project is developing. Successfully, I hope, and with promise of near profit to you and much benefit to many later on. Do you know it is in forward-looking enterprises like this — speculative enterprises — that capital has to be paid out in wages before any values or returns come in. The only distinct command against all speculation that I know of is, “take no thought of the morrow.”
I hope things are eventuating with your woman acquaintance who plans to start a booking agency with the emphasis on ideas rather more than names and reputations.
It was very nice to know you and talk with you, and I hope to see more of you.
Sincerely yours,
Spencer Heath
