Letter to Arthur W. Pierce, 26 Thompson Place, Pittsfield, Massachusetts
September 17, 1948
Dear Mr. Pierce:
Mrs. Blume writes me that your Society desires to avoid controversy over social or economic questions. She asks me to make some suggestion to you for meeting this condition in case I should have the honor of being asked to speak before you.
I take it that your organization consists largely of persons having a matured interest and experience in scientific theory and practical technology and are therefore ripe for a somewhat broader mental perspective than is likely among those freshly trained or those who are still actively, intently and technically engaged. I think, therefore, I would most prefer to lay before you some well considered views upon the simple methods and procedures that have been most fruitful and remain most promising in scientific research. In my own investigations I have found these fundamentals simpler and much more charming to the imagination than seems to be generally supposed.
For a formal topic I would suggest, The Three Dimensions of Events, or, The Three Fundamentals of Physical Science and Some of their Applications. The presentation would be from a new and simplified point of view suggesting interesting possibilities and still wider applications. The precise topic is not essential, it being understood that the presentation would be in popular and almost entirely non-technical form.
Very truly yours,
11 Waverly Place, New York City after Sept. 20.
