December 13, 1961
My dear Mrs. White:
Meeting you yesterday on the bus and plane winging westward into future dawns was an experience of the spirit that all too seldom comes — one that raises one’s sense of self-in-other, one-in-All.
How I would like to journey longer or, best of all, to visit in your warmly beckoning land. So, next best, as I hope, let me at least send my “Citadel, Market and Altar” (it is in the post to you) to represent, though least personal, perhaps the most real — the most enduring — side of me.
Something in our visit makes me think of Beatrice Harradan’s “ships that pass in the night” of many years ago, but looking to fine and fair horizons both near and very far from now and here.
I like to think admiringly of the many happy plans and dreams you continue so capably and so beautifully to achieve.
Most cordially,
