Carbon of letter from Heath and MacCallum to grandson Irvan T. O’Connell, Jr., with the Marines in Korea

Dear Irvan,

 

     Some time ago, August 23^rd to be exact, we (Spencer and I) sent you a letter with a number of things enclosed that we had been advertising and sending out by way of undelusioning and enlightening the world. We have been wondering whether you received it. We surely hope so because we are just now on the point of sending you a recently published scholarly work by Dr. Russell Kirk entitled, The Conservative Mind, sending it to the same address as before. I think you will like this book even though, like Toynbee, it shows Conservatism traditionally and historically all dressed up but without any place in particular to go. Anyhow, I hope you will enjoy reading it and will accept it along with the good feeling and best wishes of your P.D.

 

     What is your mind doing about thinking – any ideas coming in or being put out? I dare say you have had heavier responsibilities put upon you, judging by what your commanding officer had to say about you some six months ago. Whatever you are doing, get it done as fast as you can and come on back here.

 

      We will shortly be spending Thanksgiving in Waterford and Winchester. Hope there will be more news from you at that time.

Everything Popdaddy says goes for me too. Hope things are interesting with you. The most interesting development here lately has been that Mr. Gaffney, author of the “Land and Liberty” article against Popdaddy, has written asking our permission to rewrite that article leaving out the personal aspersions, and asks for more material to get a better understanding of proprietorship. The fact of our continuing to circulate reprints of his article with the review probably helped to bring about his present attitude. Popdaddy has worked up a discussion of national income in reply to a recent publication on the subject by Roy A. Foulke, vice president of Dun and Bradstreet and a Georgist. Also an interesting visit with Sinnott, of Cell and Psyche, at Yale a couple of weekends ago.
