Letter to Felix Wittmer, c/o Frank Chodorov, Editor, The Freeman Magazine, Irvington-on-Hudson, New York.

September 13, 1954

Dear Mr. Wittmer:

I am happy to observe that you for one have penetrated to the real significance of what is involved in all this McCarthy investigation. Your article in the September Freeman sets the matter out with excellent emphasis and form. I hope it will attract a great deal of attention, especially by the American Bar Association and others capable of bringing it before a wider public.

Apropos of the same, I am sending you the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal for August 16th carrying a letter from me in which I attempted in a small way to draw attention to the exceedingly grave issue of executive usurpation involved.

There cannot be any doubt that the Hiss, Remington, White and such known cases of treason in high places signalize a far more general deterioration of the Executive Department than the public is disposed to believe. Nothing but the existence of such a condition could possibly account for the executive warfare against McCarthy in his legitimate efforts to expose the communist infiltration and therewith the executive default or mis-doing under which it very evidently has continued.

Please let me congratulate you for your clear penetration, and the editor of The Freeman Magazine for his understanding and publicizing of it.

Sincerely yours,

SH:m
