Carbon of letter from Heath to Donald A. McLean, Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

July 10, 1955

Dear Dr. McLean:

For some years I have from time to time entertained some very happy recollections of your father, especially in connection with his devotion to the ideas and propaganda of Henry George with which I was also connected for many years.

However, as “the minds of men are broadened with the process of the suns,” I have achieved too wide a perspective to be content with any legislation or otherwise coercive procedures for the advancement of peace and prosperity for mankind.

Thinking you may have similarly advanced I am sending you a critique of the land socialism of Henry George as it rests upon the economic argument contained in his masterpiece, Progress & Poverty. I am sending a copy of my review of this book for whatever aid it may be to you in an understanding of our voluntary society apart from coercive government as resting upon its basic voluntary institution, property in land.

From my recollections of and great respect for your father I feel assured of similar qualities in the heart and mind of his son.

                        Sincerely yours,

SH/m
