Carbon of a letter to Edmund A. Opitz, The Foundation for Economic Education, Irvington-on-Hudson, New York

August 22, 1956

Dear Dr. Opitz:

Copies of your two volumes, The Powers That Be and The Kingdom Without God, came into me only a few days ago. I have finished The Powers That Be and am deeply immersed in The Kingdom. This letter is only to tell you how deeply I am impressed, encouraged and inspired. How finely you have pictured the development of the Constantine complex in the Church of today, how the power-minded element is playing up to make the Church a servant in the house of Pharaoh.

Your chronological picture of this attempt is a scholarly job well done, and your gloss on its spiritual significance very keen. I feel that you have taken high ground of succession in a tradition of Fifield and Cowling, and yet, like all spiritual pioneers, have the religious humility to realize that there is a vast and beautiful beyond to be explored and enjoyed.

I hope to have many contacts with you on the spiritual frontier.  Please extend my best sentiments also to your associate, Dr. Harper, whom I admire so much for his grasp of the fundamentals of natural science as for his competence in his own special field.

Sincerely yours,
