Carbon of a letter to John Archibald Wheeler, 95 Battle Road, Princeton, New Jersey
November 26, 1956
Dear Dr. Wheeler:
I want to thank you very much indeed for the reprint of “A Septet of Sibyls: Aids in the Search for Truth.” Reading it again and again, I am increasingly impressed by its practical objectivity and universality as a guide to finding rationality (as ratios) in ever wider fields. It brings to light the method that commonly is implicit in all the seekings that succeed.
Under your caption, “The Struggle for Survival as Compulsion to Find Out,” and in your maxim, “truth for the sake of life,” leading to “Truth for Truth’s Sake” (esthetic motivation), I am struck by the correspondence with Robert Bridges’ Testament of Beauty, particularly lines 741 to 754 in Book III, and with the thought in a little booklet of my own which I enclose.
My own special interest is in trying to get at the basic process among elementary units of organizations, whether physical or biological, and in understanding the process that corresponds to this (while also “transcending” it) in the societal organization of interfunctioning men. Your seven sibyls are helpful guides indeed.
With congratulations and all good wishes,
Sincerely yours,
SH/m
