Carbon of a letter from Heath to Edward C. Facey, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York

February 25, 1957

Dear Mr. Facey:

Our friend, Crawford John MacCallum, of the Physics Department of Cornell, has sent us a copy of the “Cornell Daily Sun” of November 21st, 1956, containing your article on individualism. We have read this with a great deal of interest and are happy to commend it for its spirit and for its intelligence.

The one crucial question your article does not raise is whether or not there is any creative alternative to the delegation of political and coercive power to political officers whose very existence depends upon the exercise of coercion upon the population as a whole. We would suggest that such an alternative might well be sought.

It is a prime function of this SCIENCE OF SOCIETY FOUNDATION to publicize the existence in our midst, potentially at least, of precisely such an alternative. We think you will discover this upon careful reading of the Purposes of our Foundation, copy of which we enclose, with special attention to Article V, which has reference to the modern institution of property in land as affording in the course of its development from now on the necessary organization for the proprietary and thereby the golden-rule method in the administration of public affairs. Further details you will find in the little booklet, “NOTES ON THE ORGANIZATION OF REAL ESTATE.” The spiritual (creative) implications of this we have in other printed form and would be glad to supply it to you upon request.

Surely the line will have to be drawn not between New Deal and Socialism, nor between Socialism and Communism or any other program for advancement of the iron rule among men in place of the golden. It must be rather between the traditional mode of political administration, which is essentially destructive, and proprietary — owner — administration, which is creative and advances both freedom and abundance among men.

                            Sincerely yours,

SH:m
